Where did my Bluetooth go?

Bluetooth used to work on my laptop but today it refused to start. Some weird error message about a Bluetooth license that had expired. WTF?

Fortunately somebody else had experienced the same problem and explained how to get it fixed.

It turned out that Windows Update pushed some bad code onto my machine. Another example of "If it ain't broken, don't fix it".
